Financial Considerations when Renting an Apartment

So, you've decided to rent an apartment. Review the section on how to find your apartment online if neccessary. There are some things you need to understand before beginning your big move.

While apartments can in many cases be significantly less expensive than houses, they come with their own set of positives and negatives. Apartments are great because you're not tied down to a long commitment. Most leases last only a year, and after that time, you can move out or renew your lease and stay where you are. Some landlords will even allow you to pay month to month. This is ideal if you travel a lot for business purposes.

If you live in a state that charges personal property taxes, you won't have any with an apartment. Also, many apartments come with water and sewer included in the rent, which can save you a bundle. You can sometimes even find properties that include all utilities including heat and even cable.

Another benefit of apartment life is the fact that you won't need to mow your own grass. Your landlord will take care of that, as well as other tasks like changing furnace filters and taking care of pests. Your lease will explain in detail what exactly your landlord will take care of and what is your responsibility.

The socialization factor is yet another positive. With lots of neighbors, you're sure to develop a few friendships! And if you have children, they'll love meeting others their own age. Some apartment buildings even provide swings and slides for kids to play on. While your children play, you can strike up friendly conversations with other parents.

Speaking of, many apartments for rent come with such amenities like large in-ground community pools and tennis courts. Imagine the cost of installing a pool or tennis court for yourself...it would be astronomical!

If you have pets, don't immediately rule out an apartment. Lots of people successfully have pets in their apartment. Many landlords will work with tenants that have pets. Some have pet deposits that they require, others limit the number of pets or the weight and size of pets, especially dogs.

So as you can see, apartment living can often be an affordable option for many people. With all the various kinds of apartments out there, you're sure to find one that's perfect for you and your family!
